Lawrence county is know as the "Mother of Counties". Thirty-one other counties in Arkansas were carved out of the original Lawrence County. Lawrence County is also frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Ozarks. The Black river divides the county into a rich fertile delta in the eastern half and the foothills of the Ozarks in the western half. Rice, soybeans, corn and peanuts are grown in the delta region while beef and poultry production are found in the foothills.

Walnut Ridge is the county seat. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 67, 412 and 63, as well as the Burlington Northern and Union Pacific railroads. Walnut Ridge is also home to the largest airport in the area. Built during World War II as a fighter training base it is still in operation today as a general aviation airport. It has two 5,000' and one 6,000 foot runways. Located around the airport is a 2,200 acre industrial park, which is home to several industries.

Hunting and fishing are mainstays. The delta provides some of the best duck hunting in the world. The Black, Spring and Strawberry Rivers, as well as Lake Charles State Park provide excellent fishing opportunities. The foothill region is home to great whitetail deer, turkey and small game hunting.

Williams Baptist College is a four year institution offering a wide array of degree progams including business, teaching and theology. Black River Technical College, located in Pocahontas (15 miles from Walnut Ridge) is a two year college offering degrees in Aviation Mechanics, Autobody, Nursing and basics that will transfer to a four year college.

Walnut Ridge is located only 25 miles from Jonesboro where you can find Arkansas State University, regional medical facilities and most amenities found in larger cities.
